Do-Over

Anybody catch the do-over in the Jets/Texans game yesterday? Early in the game the Texans had the a third down and had some late subsitutions. They snapped the ball as the Jets were substituting personnel. The Jets stopped the Texans short of the line to gain but they were flagged for having 12 men on the field.

The referee explained that the flag was for 12 on the field but the Texans were guilty of late substitutions and then snapping the ball quickly so the Jets couldn't respond. He then said the play didn't count and that the Texans were warned that if they did this again they would be penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct. The down was played again.

The NFL has some strange rules. I bet this is one of them.

Not a "do-over". It's a dead ball foul.

I saw this same call earlier in the year.

If the offense substitutes, then the defense is allowed time to counter with defense personnel. If the offense plays with the same personnel as the prior play, it would be a penalty against the defense. I think it is a fairness issue.

In the words of an NFL official who I saw earlier this evening - the play is "voided". All fouls that occur during the play, with the exception of dead ball or unsportsmanlike fouls, are ignored.

The first offense is not a dead ball foul.

REPLY: I think Tom mentioned that al 15-yd. fouls are assessed which would include personal fouls as well as DBFs.
