1st and 10, or.....

Please don't throw stuff at me for an ignorant question. I'm a basketball ref trying to educate myself. Last week I was listening to a hs game on the radio. On a kickoff return, visitors were flagged for clipping. Announcer said it would be 1st and 25. Is that right in high school? or any other level for that matter?

no, in NFHS, you can't have a series start with more than a 1st and 10.

For a clip or other live ball 15 yard penalty, it will never be 1 and 25, on any level.

To address bossman's post, yes, you can have a series start at 1 and 25 if there is a DB foul after the RFP has been blown and the chains already set. That's the only way that comes to mind. There might be others.

I woulnd't rely too much on what the announcer said. Most coaches don't know the difference between clipping and a block in the back (15 yds vs. 10). Either way, after enforcement it's first and 10.

Thanks for the info guys. I was reasonably sure I was right but I know very well that there are way too many "Everybody knows you can't do that," rules in all sports that are not really there. The only reason I had any doubt was that I kept waiting for the announcers to correct themselves when the chain was set but they never did. No accountability for not knowing what you're talking about? Kinda like coaches sometimes.

You're right. We shouldn't throw stuff at you for that. We'll wait until we go to one of your basketball games!

In the NCAA, the only time you'd have first and 25 is if there is a dead ball foul AFTER the ready for play.

(Missed that once this year. [insert red face not due to sunburn]).
