It is simply amazing how the same crew was the best rated in Week 1, then the worst rated in Week 2. Just goes to show...

May not be related to topic. But rating NFL official this thought came to mind from the game I was at.

If I were a NFL DB coach, I would teach my DB how to tangle feet with WR's. I guess knocking someone down with you feet is not a foul.

I understand the "incidental contact", but if a WR is running down field a pass is thrown to him, that he probably will catch and a DB trips him. I think it should be pass interference. TMO

REPLY: The key to the tangling feet thing at any level is that the official needs to determine if the tangling was inadvertent and incidental to the DB's playing of the ball. If so, no foul. If the DB is playing the man and the tangling appears to be premeditated, you can bet that NFL and NCAA officials for sure, and probably HS officials as well will see that and judge it accordingly. I really don't think they would be able to pull this off.

I know, I was being a little sarcastic. I sure if it happens on a regular basis, someone would catch on and put a stop to it.

But my point actually is shouldn't interference be called. Very seldom is interference done on purpose. So wether a DB's legs trip a WR or whether his arm hits the WR early, its still early. I think it should be flaged. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like common sense to me.

The rule of thumb is if they are playing the ball, no foul. Playing the ball in my mind is looking for it,not looking at the opponent.

REPLY: I guess the question for you that begs asking is this: If the receiver and defender's legs get tangled up while both are making a bona fide attempt to play the ball, and the defender falls, are you going to call it offensive pass interference? If you say "no," you really can't hang your hat on a DPI call should it be the receiver who falls, can you? Remember that both players have an equal right to the ball.
