Though I do not even own one...
I've been switched to Referee for my 3-man JV game this week. I'm working with 2 officials with even less experience than me. I'm normally a back judge, so the mechanics, keys, and signals are largely foreign to me. Other than not forgetting a coin, any quick tips for a white-hat virgin? I'm gonna comb through Rule 10 tomorrow at work as a start. |

I was in your shoes last week. I really enjoyed the opportunity to fill that position. The two major things I'd tell myslef a week ago are...S-L-O-W down. I was blowing the ready for play and my chain crew wasn't even set yet. Go through the progression that was posted in the other thread. In order to get to everything you really need to not get in a hurry. I'd also make sure that when winding the clock (make sure you know when to and when not to...again slow down and think about it) the timer can see you. I was just giving a one rotation wind and when my right arm was away from the press box, it was very easy to miss.

JV game, I would not even worry about a white hat. That is not necessary.
Three man crew, keys, forget it, just hustle your tail off. When I work three man crews, I WH but at the U pos! It just helps the other two officials and allows me to keep an eye on the QB and lineman. It may not sound right or look good, but it helps out the other two officials. I just hope this bad habit does not carry over to Friday night. I can see it now, QB comes up to the line and says, "sir, do you not belong over here on this side?" OUCH! I has not happened yet, nightmares. |
