Question

Is the correct signal for a touchback at the high school level:

(1) hand high above head and waving back and forth above head, very similar to a fair catch signal; or

(2) hand to the side moving up and down, like is done at the NFL level.

Never actually thought about this, but the picture in the book agrees with #1. However, I was taught to give the same signal as a timeout, but only using 1 arm.

When I first saw this it caught me a little bit by surprise as well. I always thought the signal for touchback was #2, but according to the signal chart it definitely is #1.

Definitely this, I always thought it was 2 when I first started but someone corrected me.
