May be, it was discussed already, but...
Can anybody explain exception to Rule 9-4-4 (NCAA!!)? It says something like this: Legal (legal = ball held and kicked according to rule, probably) scrimmage kick made beyond the NZ is penalizied with 15 yards and NO loss of down. There is also nothing about the ball becoming dead. Especially this sentence sounds fantastic: "No loss of down if the foul occurs when a legal scrimmage kick is beyond the neutral zone." Well, scrimmage kick is WHAT? Caught, touched, made or what? However rule 6-3-10-c says: A scrimmage kick beyond the NZ is live-ball foul that causes the ball to become dead. Penalty: 5 yard from previous spot and loss of down. So, one rule says 5 yards, second 15 yards; one says ball remains live, second becomes dead; one says loss of down, second repeat the down. Easy example: 4-10 at A-30. Snap direct to punter who runs to A-31 and punts the ball to B-20 where ball goes out of bounds. No other fouls occured. Thanks for explanation |

9.4.4 refers to illegally kicking a ball, a loose ball.
I beleive the exception is there on for a sitution where a legal scrimmage kick has been made and downfield somwhere, team-A illegal kicks the loose ball. Your example is for an illegal kick, not illegally kicking (a loose) ball. Kill the play, step off 5 yards from the previous spot and kive the ball to team-B. B 1/10 @A-25 |
