Loss of Down
Doesn't the loss of down portion of the illegal forward pass negate any chance to run a play. I have always been under the understanding that any penalty that included loss of down could end the game. Now maybe I'm wrong and if I am I'm sure you guys will let me know, but I think that's the answer.

Sometimes you can only hope the game ends at the end of the field closest to your car. Yes, A gets the untimed down even though it doesn't seem quite fair to B. It is, however, an accepted penalty on the last timed down of a period. It does put B in a weird situation by keeping A from winning but giving them another chance. We have discussed this play at our meetings in Calif. The mechanic we adopted is 1)Run the play, 2)Blow the whistle 3)Run away fast!
