K kicks the ball to R who gains poss. at the 1/2 ft line and his Momentum carries him into the end zone. Touchback or spotted at the 1/2? I was told it is spotted at the 1/2ft line. Another guy told me last night that it is a touchback but if the receiver gets the ball at the 5 or above and he ran back into the end zone and then advanced it would stay a live ball. Seems like the first one does not seem fair to spot at the 1/2ft line just because of momentum (at least let the guy try to return or take a knee after all he was inbounds at the time of catch).

REPLY: Let's get you straight on this. If a defensive player catches a kick or fumble or intercepts a forward or backward pass and his original momentum takes him into his own endzone, the ball remains alive. DO NOT BLOW IT DEAD! He can attempt to advance it. If however, it becomes dead in his endzone in his team's possession (he's tackled there, he fumbles it OOB, he throws a backward pass to a teammate who muffs it across the endline, etc.), the ball is awarded to his team 1-10 at the spot of the catch. In your play that would be the 1/2 ft line. Note that the defensive player must get this possession as a result of a "catch" or an "interception" which means he possesses it while in flight. In Federation rules, this momentum exception is not extend3ed to situations where the defensive player gets possession of a grounded kick, backward pass, or fumble. NCAA rules do extend the momentum exception to recoveries.

By the way, give this post to "Another guy" to get him straight on it.

Heed Bobs advice Trainman52, the other guy has told you wrong and needs to attend some remedial momentum rule class.

rules always help -

8-5 I believe is the momentum rule

Casebook 8.5.2 situation H deals specifically with kicks - in flight and grounded.
