I tried working with a finger whistle for a few games this season.
After working basketball since 1987 and football starting in 1994, I just can't do it. My normal reaction is to spit the whistle out after blowing it. With a finger whistle I will put the whistle in my mouth and slide my fingers out when I have to make a two handed signal (e.g., stop the clock). Then I spit the whistle on the ground more times than not. So I wear a lanyard and drop the whistle from my mouth at the snap and carry it in my hand. Best of both worlds. Rich

Offiials' Appearance
I agree with the flag. Tuck it in. Looks terrible hanging out. I prefer to tuck them in my waistband. Now about the shoes..get a life guys. There may be a little name or logo on the back of the shoes..big deal. I don't think the coaches are comparing shoes on the crew. There are bigger things in life to worry about! Some shoes have a light color logo on the sole. What do you do there?

Regardless of whether its finger or lanyard, pocket or belt, I think its important to have consistency in any association. Its no good to have guys who free lance because they "know better". Seeing everyone on the same page sends a positive message. It's like seeing 3 guys with short sleeves, and two with long - regardless of the opinions of each individual in that situation, being consistent trumps everything else.

coming back into this thread--
as it has picked up somer extra items: finger whistle: I think the one handed touchdown signal looks horrible, lanyard lets you whistle/spit out/signal !! jackets: I do not like the look of jackets. Get a size larger striped shirt and wear your cold/wet weather gear underneath. Looks a lot better. Just more thoughts from this old school umpire.
