Why is NCAA restoring free kick from fair catch?
I just heard that for this season, NCAA is restoring, for the first time since the 1950 abolition of the fair catch, the option of a free kick after a fair catch, under conditions where it'd now have to be a field goal attempt. What reason are they giving for making this change? I don't believe it's just to make it easier for officials who also work Fed games. Is it just to reduce, even by the tiniest degree, runbacks, because CoP plays are physically dangerous?
