Last play

A scores on last play of game and the score making the score 20-22 in favor of Team B. On the play Team B has a face mask in the end zone. What do we have?

NFHS: Penalty will be assessed on the try, half the distance to the goal. Is there supposed to be something tricky or hard about this question?

I think it'd be considered tricky because of a change in recent years in Fed football regarding enforcement options on live ball fouls by a team that gives up a touchdown -- end of a run, when the run ends beyond a goal line. Or at least there was discussion of a possible change, or just discussion period, because I remember a bit of it here. On one side it's like, why should they get two bites of that apple? On the other side it's like, why shouldn't the offended team have choices similar to those that would occur after non-scoring downs?

Here's a question: Does it matter whether the foul by B was before a pass was thrown?

There is no option here. The OP states its the last play of the game. The penalty has to be assessed on the try whether it was a live ball foul or a dead ball foul. There will be no subsequent kickoff. Depending on the result of the try it will be a loss for Team A or a tie game and on to OT.
