I was white hat (first year white hat) in a cross town rival JV game. This was a defensive battle with the final score being 6 - 0 for the home team. The score came on a block punt. Here is the situation:
3rd and 10. QB throws a legal forward pass. Defensive end flagged for roughing the passer. Pass is intercepted and during the runback a IW is blown (mine). Once I pull my head out of the ground, I went over to the coach (defense) and explained to him the procedure for IW and also explained to him that I had a penalty for roughing the passer which occured before the interception. I informed him that he would not be keeping the ball and that we would be penalizing him 15 yards and the offense would get an automatic first down. You can imagine everything that he called me in his mind. Did I handle the situation properly? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. |

You handled it right. The penalty take precedence over the I.W.
I don't understand WHY the coach was upset over the I.W. Even if an I.W. were not sounded, the offense would get the ball back... Lesson: the best thing that can happen during a down with an I.W. is having a penalty.
