Agreed, but that chaos is what leads to better and more refined, less ambiguous rules.
I think Mike Sears is injecting his own philosophical view that there is no room in football for anything that allows a team to use deceit in this manner. I am not sure that is the intention of the rule makers. That doesnÂ’t mean I think Mike Sears is wrong. I could be the one that is wrong. I just think the rule is ambiguous. To me the rule itself implies that deceit can be used if timed properly. Otherwise there is no need for the last part of the sentence.

I also believe both teams should have the benefit of knowing who is participating during any given down. But I put most of that responsibility on the shoulders of the opponent. They need to pay attention.
