Blocked Punt for A First Down

We've discussed it on here, and I've discussed it in association meetings. I've never seen it in a game, nor have any with which I've officiated. Yet it happened in the Alamo bowl.

Great heads up from the players. And excellent explanation by the WH.

How many fans, coaches, and players would know that could be done?

It really does not matter how many know, the fact they are giving a first down. The rule has been around for some time.

Peace

I see your "blocked punt for a first down", and I raise you a "Missed/blocked field goal for a game-winning touchdown in a playoff game"

Most of them, I'd say, in the sense that if you showed them the play & asked what the result was, they'd get it right. Also I think most players would correctly try to advance the ball in that situation if they caught it.

About the only ones who'd get it wrong would've been those who'd seen a game under Fed rules some years ago where the ball was dead on recovery by K.

Had this in my first year in a JV game. Home team had punt blocked and a lineman pick it up and ran for a first down. Visiting HC asked for clarification and the WH told him why and he understood. That was in 1999 and have not seen it since.
