It's always our fault, "control the game", "let'um play"

Ok the Texas legislature needs to get together and revise the assault on a sports official law ASAP.Does the UIL require student athletes to take the NFHS sportsmanship course? If not that would be a good start.

Why?

I don't think a law, or any proposed change to the law, would've made one bit of difference on the field in either of these games.

The John Jay incident was clearly a premeditated act on the part of the two players involved (and, it sounds like, at least one ass. coach; and yes, I intentionally abbreviated it that way).

This incident seems like more of a 'heat of the moment' type thing.

I still want to know why he thinks the law needs to be changed... what needs to be changed about it.

He probably thinks it should be made a felony, like it is in many other states.

I believe it is because the "Law" as currently written only addresses assaults on an official by a person not involved in the sport, meaning it does not cover assault by a player/coach on an official.

Not true. It covers this situation... and it IS being followed up on as an assault.

I don't know if the "Law" itself needs revision, as much as the possible enforcement. Leading these (out of personal control THUGS) off the playing field in handcuffs might lessen the temperature of "moments" they need to learn to handle better.

ajmc has a good point -- when that attack happened at John Jay, they should've stopped the game and led those criminals off the field in cuffs.

I agree.

The law is fine. And it supports us.

The UIL and district administrators on the other hand...

Exactly.

We wouldn't have played another snap in my game until those players were led off in front of God and everbody.

Is that an exception to the general law of assault? So it's specifically not an assault if it's by a player or coach on an official at the same event?
