We're not talking about defender falling into the path. If the defender falls down, then remains in that position and the offensive player comes along at some point after and trips, this is not a foul.

A defender who steps in the lane with his back to the dribbler and is run over 5 seconds later also did not have LGP. What do you call on that one?

This is a valid argument. But I don't see lack of LGP as the key.
