One of the things that I've learned the hard way to have in my bag is a little sewing kit.
Having to work the first half with the back seam of my trousers held together with staples and paper clips while the Athletic Director went looking through teacher's desks for a sewing kit. Pretty embarassing lesson to learn, but now there's needle, black thread, and safety pins everywhere I go. I also keep an extra pair of black shoe laces in my shoe bag -- just in case. |

Last year I was up to 6 Advils for some two game sets. A pain patch may be a better way to go. |
Icy Hot, Deep Heat both have a pain patch that adheres to your back. Also they have prescription pain patches that have novicaine in them to numb the area. If you sweat alot you may want to put extra tape on it. This stuff works like a gem.
Also something else that works is "Blue Stuff". |

I go dressed ready for the game. That way I usually don't forget anything - lesson learnt the hard way ... numerous times.
Also have numerous whistles, lanyards, 2 rule books (one that is taken out when WE are looking rules up, the other just in case), strapping tape, anti-inflammatories, toiletries, towel and a change of clothes. Invariably I still forget something, usually spare jocks. |
I never travel dressed to call a game. I don't think it is very professioinal for one. I am usually coming directly from work for another.
|
After I wrote my answer last night, I went up and looked in my bag, and the two things I forgot, you guys mentioned: sewing kit, and pre-game board. I also carry water in the car, and advil.
|
A couple of things I bring that haven't been mentioned:
antacid spare knee and ankle braces extra shoelaces--black of course copy of schedule Safety pins air needle I have used every one of these things at one time or another. |
Don't schools provide water for you guys?? I always make sure that we have a cooler and about 8-10 bottles of water waiting in the Ref's changing room. Have just made it a part of getting things ready for a home game.
|
Big variety of "hosting" in the high schools that we serve. Some provide bottled water, cookies, and a personal escort that walk you to and from the court and help you with anything you need. Others hand you a key to the laundry room (no shower facility and not even a bottle of water) and let you fend for yourself.

Walter,do you hire bearers to help carry your equipment into the games?
|
A Samsonite rolling "carry-on" bag does the trick. Plenty of pockets and a lot of room. A guy at camp recommended it and now I can't go without it.

I have two bags, one main bag and a backup bag.
In the main bag, I put: 1 pr pants 1 pr shoes 2 shirts (micro-mesh and reg.) 1 pr socks...Thorlo uniform support socks 1 compression shorts (intera/coolmax/dri-fit) 1 undershirt (intera/coolmax/dri-fit...NEVER cotton) 1 Jacket 2-3 whistles...one on a noose, two on smitties ball needle and miniature pump 1 pr extra laces 1 set of books: rules, case, off. manual, simplified, and handbook association roster game schedule dry-erase pregame board towel bottle of liquid shower soap deodorant toothbursh/paste & mouthwash Advil & Peptobismol tablets (never needed them yet) small sewing kit chapstick gatorade + granola bars In the backup bag: 1 each: shirt pants shoes socks compression shorts undershirt (coolmax/drifit/intera) whistle/smitty I leave this bag in the trunk of the car all season in case I tear or forget anything essential. |
I get a lot of abuse from the rest of the unit for having the best stocked bag in the area. It has most of the things already mentioned with a few additions:
Black felt tip marker (it and a piece of tape can make a very quick patch for pants or socks) Gum (I don't need it but one of my partners does and without it he can't officiate for sh-- so I always have extra) Change (for those cheap schools that won't give you water or soda but have machines in the locker room) Ace bandage Rolaids At least a dozen good comebacks for each coach |
Man, I must travel light compared to you guys
For really close games, I come dressed. For anything futher than about 50 miles, I bring my ref clothes in a bag. I always have the latest rule books (the one with all the dog edged pages), machanics, extra whistles and lanyards, the roster of officials with my schedulers name highlighted, and sometimes a map from the Internet. I bring a towel. But that's about it.
Oh yeah. I always have spare money in my bag in case I lose my wallet. Enough for food and gas. |

I know beforehand which games will go into overtime - NONE! |
That's easy. I always know the score before the game begins
zero to zero.
I am suprised no one asked about how I am dressed. Stuffed or lightly seasoned. |
