NFHS Test Question driving me nuts (as usual)

Did you have this question?
“Players not occupying a marked lane space must remain beyond the vertical plane of the free-throw line extended until restrictions end for such players.”
True or False

Now here is the new rule:
“9-1-3f. A player, other than that the free thrower, who does not occupy a marked lane space, may NOT have either foot BEYOND the vertical plane of the free-throw line extended and the three-point line which is farther from the basket until the ball touches the ring or backboard or until the free throw ends.”

The rule states “may NOT have either foot BEYOND the vertical plane of the free-throw line extended”
The rule is defining “beyond” as towards the key and baseline.
So, if they can’t be “beyond”, then the answer must be false.

Do you remember this one and if section 9-1-3f was one of the questions you got wrong... or right?

Which side of free-throw line extended is "beyond" in the question and which side is "beyond" in the rule?

BTW, NOT using all caps to imply yelling, but simply to highlight the words in question.

I think you're using the word "beyond" too statically here. I look at it as not crossing whatever boundary line is the subject of the rule. Since we know the subject players can not be inside of the free throw line extended, and the question uses the phrase "remain beyond", then we know the question is asking if the players can cross that boundary line prior to restrictions ending.

the question, by saying "must remain", is implying that the players are in a legal position to begin with. it is asking how long they have to stay there. they could have never been legal inside of the plane, closer to the basket, so they wouldn't ask you how long they have to stay there…. i agree with badnews…

Beyond is a relative term. It does not define a specific area. It is about the context of the usage.
