2014 Final Four officials

NCAA DIVISION I MEN’S BASKETBALL COMMITTEE NAMES

GAME OFFICIALS FOR 2014 MEN’S FINAL FOUR

NORTH TEXAS — The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee has approved 10 game officials recommended by John W. Adams, the national coordinator of officiating, to work Saturday’s two national semifinal games and Monday’s national championship game. A three-man crew will work each Final Four game, while one official will serve as the standby official for all three contests.

The NCAA has notified these 10 individuals selected to work the 2014 Final Four, which will be played at AT&T Stadium in North Texas:

• Pat Adams, Mobile, Ala.;

• Joe DeRosa, North Canton, Ohio;

• Verne Harris, Denver, Colo.

• John Higgins, Omaha, Neb.;

• Michael Roberts, Atlanta, Ga.;

• Doug Shows, Rome, Ga.;

• Doug Sirmons, Virginia Beach, Va.;

• Michael Stephens, Cranston, R.I.;

• Mike Stuart, Maryville, Tenn.; and

• Terry Wymer, North Baltimore, Ohio.

“The 10 men selected to officiate in this year’s Final Four have been evaluated after every game in the tournament, and all of them consistently graded out as excellent in play calling accuracy, communicating with coaches and players and officiating the games according to the rules as written,” said Adams. “They represent the best in NCAA men’s basketball officiating.”

Harris will officiate his seventh Final Four, while Stuart and Higgins are both calling their fifth and Shows is calling his fourth. This will be the third Final Four for Stephens and Adams, and will be the second for DeRosa, Sirmons and Wymer. Roberts will be calling his first Final Four.

Saturday’s first semifinal features South Regional champion and overall No. 1 seed Florida facing Connecticut, the No. 7 seed and champion from the East Regional. The Gators are in their first Final Four since winning back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007, while the Huskies are in their fifth Final Four and are searching for their fourth national title in the past 15 years. Tipoff is set for 5:09 p.m. CST.

The second game, which will begin 40 minutes after the conclusion of the first game, pits West Regional champion Wisconsin against Midwest Regional champion Kentucky. The second-seeded Badgers defeated top-seeded Arizona to reach its first Final Four since 2000, while No. 8 Kentucky defeated three of the top four seeds in the region to advance to their third Final Four in the past four years.

The officiating assignments for each semifinal game, as well as Monday night’s national championship game, will be announced Saturday morning.

Just label it Jerry World and call it a day. ;)

Mark T. DeNucci, Sr. Tue Apr 01, 2014 11:04am

I am pulling for DeRosa and Wymer. I have known Terry for over 20 years.

I know Joe through a shared close personal friend (read: goombah).

I have known Terry for over 20 years. During Mark, Jr.'s first year of officiating, he and I officiated a girl's 8th grade game in which Terry's daughter was playing. I saw Terry and the stands but did not have chance to point him out to Junior. Early in the 1st QT, Mark had a throw-in in front of Terry and Terry asked him if was difficult having to carry such an old official as a partner. LOL!

I really thought Tommy Eades had a great year and should have made it back. He had a much better season than several chosen including Shows!:mad:

I personally think Tom Eades is a top 5 guy. While I'm not going to say anything negative about anybody working this weekend, I just think Eades is very solid and does a tremendous job of staying out of the game !!!!

No marginal "And 1's", stays in his primary except for obvious felonies, does a great job of trusting lead on drives to basket as trail, body language is very quiet, not a lot of verbage with bench / players.... Just my humble opinion.

Sounds like using quality judgment, communicating well, trusting partners, and working one's PCA.

So how exactly does that equate to "staying out of the game"? That's a silly fanboy phrase. It seems to me that a quality official is always part of the game.

Referee who was suspended in NBA playoffs works college game - ESPN

Ref Joe DeRosa returns to basketball

Updated: November 13, 2010, 8:17 PM ET
Associated Press

The official who was suspended one game without pay during the NBA playoffs for throwing a ball at a fan, was back on the court Saturday for No. 17 Butler's season-opening 83-54 win over Marian on Saturday.
NBA spokesman Tim Frank confirmed in an e-mail that DeRosa had retired after officiating last season's NBA finals.

John Adams, the NCAA's coordinator for men's basketball officiating, confirmed it was the same ref and said he was glad to have DeRosa, a longtime NBA veteran, working college basketball games.
DeRosa became a national figure during last spring's Eastern Conference finals.

At halftime of Game 2 between Boston and Orlando, DeRosa was walking to the scorer's table to get the warm-up jackets for his crew when a fan behind the table approached him, gesturing with his arms and appearing to shout at the veteran official. DeRosa flipped the game ball to the fan, who tossed it back.

The league then took the unusual step of suspending DeRosa for one game without pay.

Nothing of that sort happened Saturday at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Butler spokesman Jim McGrath said the officials are assigned by the Horizon League, not hired by individual schools.

Now DeRosa could become a familiar face at mid-major conferences around the country.

Besides doing Horizon League games, Adams said DeRosa is expected to work games in Conference USA, the Sun Belt Conference and the Ohio Valley Conference.

Bill Benner, the Horizon League's senior associate commissioner for external affairs, declined comment on DeRosa.

It's the same official. And DeRosa worked two NBA Finals games the same playoffs in which he served that one game suspension.

canuckrefguy Sat Apr 05, 2014 04:00pm

I'm a little puzzled at the backstory, have to admit. The story didn't make it seem like DeRosa "threw a ball at a fan". :confused:

I presume John Adams feels the NBA's loss is his gain.

Most definitely, and I don't think this is Derosa's first Final Four since coming back to the NCAA.

I'm pulling for Verne Harris. I attended his camp about 8 years ago or so. Great teacher.

Mike Roberts is the alternate, so Wymer, Adams, and Stuart are on UK/Wisc.

I don't understand how someone completely kicks a rule in the First Four at Dayton and then gets selected to work the Final Four.

Adam -

In the Tuesday game between Tenn / Iowa....there was a flagrant elbow committed by Tenessee while the ball was live during a ft throw. Crew considered a dead ball tech. Kid that got elbowed should have shot ft's but didn't.

Also think ball was put inbounds at the wrong spot as well. This is play NVRef is referring to I believe......
