I'm creating a website that will be a service to official associations/organizations of any sport. I'm looking for a good name that will be simple but sufficiently descriptive. One idea I have is RefTown.com.

I'd like any suggestions or ideas you may have.

If your association is looking for one, I should have a beta version up in about a week or two. Not all features will be complete at that time but some of the core functions will be present. I post a new message then with a sample of the site contents open to the public.

Thanks.

Cameron,

I would not use "ref" or any other portion or form of the word "referee" in whatever site you try to create. It was not that long ago that referee.com, or whoever the parent company is, sued this site and made them change their name from eReferee.com to Officiating.com.

Talking Since this is for organizations, look for .org names

You can go to Netsol.com and look up domain names. I wouldn't use anyone else. The reason is that Network Solution is the sole authority for domain names and always has been. Others can resell names and for some reason can offer them for less. But, I have had experiences when I looked up domain names from some of these companies, found one I liked, then when I tried to purchase the name, it was unavailable and had been purchased by the company I was using to search.

Since this is for organizations, you can use the .org name instead of .com. These are generally more available. When you get a name, copyright it. That will protect you in case someone tries to steal your name.

If you want ideas, look at the one I created for my chapter.

Good luck...

Sorry Mark,

Domain names have a 255 character limitation.

I would suggest a shorthand version of the same.

Actually I would use anyone BUT Network Solutions! They did have a total monopoly on domain names a few years ago, but that was finally stopped.

That's why domains went from $70 for 2 years to about $10 a year!

You might try GoDaddy.com -- I've heard good things about them.

Cool

Camron - I like the name reftown, but there may be some reluctance on the part of baseball officials to use it because they are always designated as umpires, not referees. Perhaps you could combine some sort of hybrid using ref and ump.

Hey - I know! How about rumptown.com?

Cameron I think you will need to have the word "official" in there somewhere... that is what we all are. Or be more general and use the word "sports."

Officials post?

Officiating corner?

Ball cops?

Sports cop

Sporting rules

Sports keepers

Sport authorities

Ball sports

Ball sport keepers

Just some thoughts...

Talking Website Name

Hey Guys,

It wasn't long ago that we had a spirited conversation over a particular incident. I think you should call it....

http://www.WHACK.com

There is no way on earth I would use Network Solutions. I had http://www.collegerecruits.com and they somehow sold it to someone else. I have the following sites registered and hosted with http://www.godaddy.com. GoDaddy rocks!

http://www.NWAhoops.com
http://www.HogsIllustrated.com
http://www.Candlemart.com
http://www.HannasCandles.com
http://www.HCCbrands.com
http://www.NWAtimes.com

Take it from someone who does this for a living, use GoDaddy. I would also be glad to help you with keywords, meta tags, and other ways to increase your search engine positioning.

Arrow I would still recommend Network Solutions

Yes, you can get these cheaper at places like Godaddy. And yes, NetSol did have a monopoly on all domain names up till a few years ago. But, if anyone you register with goes out of business, you will have a hard time and a lot of trouble getting these names re-registered with someone else.

I also do this for a living. I have seen the nightmare people have gone through with some of the smaller vendors. If it is worth the $20/yr you save go with someone else. But, NetSol is the main player here.

It is kinda like the new utility companies or long distance carriers. You can get a better deal. And sometimes it is worth it. It is just a personal choice.

I won't list my websites because it would take up too much room.
Best of luck to you.

As long as we're on copyright infringement - this one sounds a lot like the store called "The Sports Authority." Of course, IANAL and YMMV.
