These Count ...

Around here, with our Catholic middle school league, the eighth grade "varsity" games actually do count. Won lost records are maintained during the season. A regular season champion is crowned. All teams are seeded for a league tournament. A league tournament champion is crowned. The top two teams from the league tournament go to the state tournament. The top teams from the state tournament go to the New England tournament.

Same thing with the sixth, and seventh, grade "junior varsity" teams.

"Junior varsity B" teams, below sixth grade, keep won lost records, but that's as far as it goes, no league champion is crowned, no post season tournaments.

As far as I'm concerned, any game, in any sport, in which they keep score, and end up with a winning team, and a losing team, "counts". If the games didn't count, they wouldn't need officials.

Had a similwr experience in the final of a tournament on Saturday but it was positive. Score was white 73 - blue 70 with 3 seconds left when blue is fouled in the act of shooting. Makes the first and then tries the old bounceback off the rim but stepped over the line. I call violation, whites ball. White throws long pass to breakaway player that bounces once on the court and goes OB. Coach says it was tipped but I was in good position and didn't see it. We bring ball all the back underneath blues goal for throw in still with three seconds left. In the end, blue couldn't score and white won.

Both coaches and several parents commented that we had done a great job. In fact, one dad even said, "I tell my kid all the time, the refs don't make mistakes, they make calls." Of course, I know we do sometimes make mistakes but what a great attitude. Wish there were more like that.

I wonder which team he was supporting that game.

They did determine the outcome. They fouled.

His son was the player I called the lane violation on for the team that lost. And, we called three PC fouls on his son in the first half. He never directed any of his "coaching" from the stands at us but instead tried to tell his son to let it go or how go handle the way we were calling the game.
