Well, their attempt certainly avoids the clause in the closely guarded rule about controlling the ball in an area enclosed by screening teammates since it is about player control. However, I might go with 2-3 on this one since they're essentially doing the same thing.

Guess we found a game worse than bainsey's halftime shutout.

Why go with 2-3 when you can go with 9-10?

9.10.1 SITUATION D: Team A, while in possession of the ball in its frontcourt:
(a) positions four players parallel with the sideline and they pass the ball from one
to another with their arms reaching beyond the sideline plane; or (b) has four
teammates surround dribbler A1. In both (a) and (b), the opponents are unable
to get close to the ball. RULING: This is considered to be a closely-guarded
situation and a violation in five seconds in both (a) and (b), if any B player is
within 6 feet of the ball or within 6 feet of the screening teammates and is
attempting to gain control of the ball. Preventing opponents from getting to the
ball by using screening teammates becomes a violation in five seconds if the
opponents are attempting to gain control.

Good cite. I thought I had seen that somewhere before but it wasn't directly in the rule where I was looking.

I know the rule was in place, but I've never seen it actually put into play. Easily a violation when 5 seconds elapses on a closely guarded situation.

What a dumb play....

Any idea what the point of this play is? I don't get it.

My guess is that they were behind about 1,000,000-0 and were just stalling to keep the score down. This was the only way they thought they could do it without getting the ball stolen.

Billy:

Mark, Jr., and I just got home from a game and this Casebook Play is over 40 years old. Junior didn't believe me about the Casebook Play.

I don't know. If given the choice, I'd take what's in the video.

If the players arms aren't extended over the boundary plane, it seems that the Case Book play wouldn't cover the action.
