Have to agree with BNR. Annoying doesn’t equal illegal and JAR is correct – “ball, ball, ball” is just as annoying and distracting. As long as they don’t do it when the other team is shooting FTs there’s nothing in the rule book to stop it.

Now, I would think the parents of the screamers might chat with the coach because that gets old quick but that’s not our problem.

I am probably letting it go by the five on the court, but not the bench personal.

When a team starts doing this, at the next stoppage I'll take the ball, hold it up over my head and in a loud voice say, "YES - IT IS A BALL - OK?" It actually works most of the time.

As aggravating and distasteful as it may be, and it has even given me a migraine, I agree with this. Thankfully, I don't see it much at the ages and levels I do.

To be clear, I'm not saying I might not try to address it. But, if the team didn't take the hint, I don't think there's much I could do about it.

I would address it, and hope it would stop. But aside from calling disconcertion during a free throw, or construing the screaming as taunting there isn't much else we can do.

Middle school tournament last year a kid yelled, "MISS!" Every time his opponent shot, but before the shot. Next break in the action, I told coach that we are supposed to be promoting good sportsmanship. He argued it wasn't illegal. My partner and I told him that it was on our court (that sounds super confrontational and intimidating but we were friendly). Dad of player yelled the rest of the match, "Blah, blah, blah is not really sporting is it!" I chuckled inside every time, lol. Gotta love the younger levels.....

As officials, we have to promote good sportsmanship and fair play.

So how is teling someone to miss promoting bad sportsmanship? If there was a ruling from a rules making body that suggested this was illegal, then I would see your point. But just because a kid said "miss" you find that unsporting? Let us not over reach our responsiblity. This is not golf for God's sake.

Peace
