Pet Peeve: Sticky Mats
So this is a pet peeve of mine. When working NCAA games we have been instructed to move the sticky mats away from the "X" at the division line to abide rule 1-17:

My question is: Why do these guys not move these mats!? Like I said earlier, if you've seen the video on the Central Hub, you would want them moved for your safety! /end rant |
I guess the question I have for you is, who is "we?"
I have never heard anyone make that kind of proclamation that these things must be moved or else. As a matter of fact I cannot think of anything being specifically mentioned. Peace |
"We" is officials in general... Yes, in the rule home management is responsible for ensuring the 3-foot boundary on the sideline is of consistent finish. However, if they don't apply the rule, the officials have to adhere to the rule (i.e. moving the mats).
Have you not seen the video JRut? Its ugly... |
I haven't seen the video. What is the danger?

Sticky subject...
Here's what we received in NCAAW. I'm guessing NCAAM received the same thing?

I move one at my (non D-1) game yesterday. The R has moved one a couple of times at games I worked in the past couple of weeks.

I think its just another reason why they need to split the rule books up. Its obviously not getting followed the same way on the two sides... Quote:

I haven't seen them other than at AAU tournaments. They are really quite useless anyway, because the dust will stick to the sneaker and traction will not be improved for very long. Just another way to suck money out of people for a product that is not needed. (See arm sleeves).

I move them if they're in front of the table. Never thought I needed a rule to do that. |
I like them, too. I never realized that they would slip like that, thought they had more grip on the bottom. Never saw one placed where I considered having it moved.
Do we need a rule to move the cheerleaders pom poms? |

Regardless of rule set we are supposed to be aware of potentially hazardous situations at all levels.
I happen to know the official in the video. He was out for nearly 6 weeks. He is an NCAA tournament official and it was too bad that it happened. Sticky mats, wet towels, etc are all things that we have seen at our games. Just because we view them as a normal part of the game does not mean they are not hazardous. It can affect officials and players alike. The message is take a closer look at the surroundings of the court and do your best to minimize the likelihood of the potential hazard. |
