Stack Rule Reference
Had to officiate a VG game the other night.
Team A has a big girl 6'5 that has no one else around her to help her out. Team B was winning easily but obviously struggling to defend this girl once she caught inside (team B's tallest player 5'11). Team A runs a stack blob inbounds play. All the players line up front to back along the edge of the key. The big girl is in the 2nd or third spot in the stack. Each BLOB the player infront stand still or dive forward leaving an easy catch for the big inside for the only real points they would consistently score. As the game goes on Team B's coach is getting increasingly furstrated with giving up layups on blobs and instructs his kids to break up the stack and get in between. Team A doesn't want this to happen and pushing and shoving breaks out. We call a couple of dead ball unsportsmanlikes on Team A and 1 on team B for the excessive contact. Team B's coach claims to be an official and that his kids have a right to be given space to establish LGP before the play starts. Basically claiming we have to let kids get in their opponents stack. Asked for a rules refernce for me to check later he couldn't give me one? Is he right or just howling?

ART. 5
Teammates shall not occupy adjacent positions which are *parallel to and within 3 feet of the boundary line if an opponent desires one of the *positions. The 3-foot restraining line is sometimes the temporary boundary line as in 1-2-2. There is no rule limiting the offensive team if they are stacking, as long as they get there first and do not displace a defender to get to that spot. If B is pushing to get in there, it's a foul on B. |

FIBA: no idea.
NFHS: 7-6-5 "Teammates shall not occupy adjacent positions which are parallel to and within 3 feet of the boundary line if an opponent desires one of the positions. The 3-foot restraining line is sometimes the temporary boundary line as in 1-2-2." Tell coach B to jump in the lake.
