They let me (scoring table) know earlier in the week. I don't believe they let the refs know about the change.

I'm coming to realize a fine line here.....as an "employee" of the event, you don't want to burn any bridges that would affect future employment with that district.

What do you think about this "line"?

The other week at my school, they changed two middle school games to 3 middle school games. Granted they shortened the quarters and warm up times of the games, but it still went an hour and half longer than normal. The referees were not real happy about the extra time for no extra pay, nor was I at the scoring table.

I have an email into the AD for clarification. I totally understand that it is Freshman level basketball and records don't truly matter.

I would either be getting paid for three games, or blocking that school for good.

They'd be paying for 3 or I wouldn't start the game. They paid for 2, they get 2.

You're right, if they pay on site. Most here pay by mailing a check later, though.

Do you get paid varsity money??

I would think pay has to do with the level you are working, not the time the game is played. Many lower level games are played the same time as the varsity and you get paid less because it is not a varsity contest.

Wait, now I'm worried that I've been buying stuff with subvarsity money!

You may want to contact the secret service and turn yourself in. It'll go a lot better for everyone that way.

Ask the AD, or head coach. Normally, there are league rules that establish the time of the quarters.... it is not an optional decision.

Why would they? It wasn't a varsity game.

In Oregon, all HS games are 8 minute quarters.... Varsity, JV, JV2, Freshman-A, Freshmen-B, etc. Varsity pays one rate, the rest pay at a lower rate. The pay difference is more for the ability of the officials that typically work each level and the importance of the games.

Some MS games are 8 minutes, some are 7 minutes. The pay sometimes depends on the length but it isn't universal.

Colorado works the same way, with the addition that some MS games are 6 minute quarters.

It's theoretical -- I only work varsity games.

I've always been of the opinion that the varsity officials should be paid appreciably more than the subvarsity officials. If those officials want to be paid more, they should do what it takes to become varsity officials.

Just received an email back from the AD....

"Thanks, but we should stick with what the conference has set! We should have kept it at 7 minutes.

Thanks for the e-mail. I will take care of this if it happens again."

I guess we put in 4 minutes of overtime, without an overtime. Insert lame joke smirk.

I've had a few exceptions to this... 12 minute 9th grade game with a 14 minute JV game on a night when the start of the 9th grade game was delayed 45 minutes due to bus-stuck-in-traffic issues, for example.

Also, one school up here does a "5th quarter" for their 9th grade games: 8 minute running time and they add an extra $8 into our game checks. Yes, I think I can work for an extra dollar per minute, thank you very much.

I was at a game Friday night where the JV(or B squad as we call it here) were 14 miniutes. And thats how it has been out here in WC MN since halves were put in. Just across the border in Sd where quarters are used they play 6:00
