Question

Are you allowed any room to move on an inbound pass? ex. Player 1 knocks the ball out of bounds. Player 2 is making the inbound pass. Is Player 2 allowed any room to shuffle his feet or does he have to stay at the point where he first placed his feet? Any help would be much appreciated.

The player throwing the ball in can move his feet any way that he wishes to.There's no such thing as a pivot foot on a throw in.On a designated spot throw in,the player has an area three feet wide that he can move in unrestricted. The player can move forward or backward within that 3 foot area. The player can also move laterally(side-to-side)as long as they keep one foot on or over the 3 foot designated area until the balll is released on the throw in.The player can also jump and pass from the designated spot.

Don't listen to tv announcers when you see a player moving around on a spot throw in.I don't think any of them really understand the rule.Welcome to the forum,Rick.

And, if the player violates, it is an inbound violation, not a travel. The official should not use the travel signal.

Just a question--can't a player move as far back as possible as long as he is in the 3 foot wide "zone"?

As far back as possible, but you still have to be on the floor - no climbing up to the 15th row of the bleachers and throwing it in for an easy alley-oop.

good point, I thought about including that little segment but passed on it...hey if the kid can climb through the crowd and keep his bearings straight so as to be with in the 3 feet turn and pass an alley oop maybe we should let him LOL

Yeah, I had a coach grill me on this and he was wrong!

In HS, there is no walking or pivot foot considerations. The rules state that the thrower has to have one foot in or over a three foot wide spot. He can move forward or back. This coach wanted to bet $100. I agreed and he reduced it to a Coke. My partner told me after the game the coach was right, but he didn't want to embaris me in front of the coach. I pulled out the rule book and showed him the rule. Then I pulled out the case book and showed him that too. The next game, I showed the coach. He said his officals had called traveling on him during the season. I'm still waiting on the Coke.

In NCAA there is a rule stating that the thrower cannot pick up a pivot foot.

I'll bet you on this one - and it'll be for more than a Coke.

I'll take some of that action, too. But I want to bet $100!

Welcome to the board, Damian!

Yeah, you guys are right. I'll keep my money thank you.

I was thinking of the NBA Playoffs. I saw that called. I had originally placed my text without that last line, then edited it and added the part about NCAA. My mistake.

Have to disagree with you again, partner. That maybe what the announcers said, but that is not the rule.
