I will answer later (I had typed a whole long response and it showed I was logged in until I submited. How aggravating is that?). The short answer to your questions is that Dick Bavetta was a crew chief but not highly rated and therefore served under crew chiefs (in what I call his farewell tour). Mott is a new crew chief. And Grillo just wasn't good enough to make playoffs. Just because he was a crew chief and was in the NBA for many years doesn't mean he was an official rated high enough to make the playoffs consistently.

I would also put crew chiefs in three categories: Outstanding, Average and New (lasting a year and then you slot into the more appropriate category based on your performance)
