I elected not to work rec league ball this season and I'm quite glad I did. It was nice not having to be the dealer of destruction, chaos and technical fouls like candy.

This is a "church" league that gives out all this abuse? Wow! Reminds me of a joke I read many years ago: The devil called up to heaven and challenged St. Paul to a basketball game. St. Paul smiled back down at the devil and said, "How can you win? We have all the best basketball players up here."
The devil grinned back up at St. Paul and said, "How can we lose? We have all the referees down here!"

I also had a weird season, good but wierd. Seemed like coaches were much worse on the sportsmanship this year. Most years I usually have about 3 or 4 T's and half would be administrative. This year I doubled that and the partners I worked games with had as many also. Had one coach offer me his glasses (easiest) who in a later game my partner T'd in the first 3 minutes of the game.
Last game of the year was Saturday for me and I had to warn both coaches in the 1st half that I had enough of the chirping. I was working with a newer official who was doing a good job, but coaches were trying hard to work us.
Both seemed to think that yelling at us was a way to protect his kids or to help us out. The game went much better when they had to "coach". At least they listened and I got to end the year without a T.

Actually, most of them are "never wuzzes". ;)

I believe the advice you're getting --- give up the rec crap --- is good advice. It's not a local problem - everywhere I've worked, in multiple sports, rec leagues are the worst - from kids to parents to board members and coaches.

Put me on the list of those which have given up rec games. I gave them up about 8 years ago and gave up the summer ball that we call AAU (but isn't) around here about 4 years ago. It has reduced my schedule to about 50 games a year but my season is much better now.

My suggestion, give up rec ball.

Is this a good thing, or a bad thing?

I guess I am alone in saying I officiate rec leagues in the off season. I find something to work on and I work the games. I understand the opinion to not do them, but I can still find something to enjoy in them. I also take the opportunity to work on conflict resolution and communication. If that doesn't work, the cops could be called.

As far as the comments the OP made - it is a human response. We are at our best when we understand the game on a different level than someone who wants their team to win.
