Upate: I had my last game - a 3A boys semi - yesterday. I think I wore my whistle out with all the fouls I called. Nevada's final was close...if you call a game that was a 40 point blow out at 6:45 of the third quarter close!

We have a mercy rule in Nevada (the state): the clock runs for the remainder of the game if the lead ever gets to 40 points in the second half. Apparently, the rule doesn't apply to the championship games. The head guy told one of the officials that he was using his executive power and they could run the clock if both coaches agreed. The coach losing didn't agree (scratching my head). The lead was up to 50 at times.

The team that won it has the number one player in the country, Shabazz Muhammad. Someone told me he finished with 51! He did all the dunks in his arsenal (360 included) and hit some three-pointers. The winning team starts three players 6'8" or taller - Shabazz is around 6'6" and really plays off guard. It was kind of silly.

The update:

Tomegun had the boys semi-final tonight and did a great job with a classic game. 70-68 score.
I was on the girls semi before that one with good partners and enjoyed it.

The Finals are Friday night. I feel fortunate to have been selected and am excited for the opportunity to represent my colleagues.

Do us proud!:D Congrats!

Further update. My semi-final game tonight will be my first opportunity to work with justacoach's son.

Rick, you need to get off work and make an inpromptu road trip.

Nice. I've seen justacoach's son and he's very good, especially to still be in undergrad.

BTW- I just found out I got a girls state quarterfinal in BNR's neck of the woods at W&M. My first state assignment!

Congrats to Tomegun and Nevada!

Hoorah, good luck!

First round boys tonight here. We have an 8 seed against a 9 seed, two small (Division 5) schools. About as good an assignment as there is for the first round, considering most of the top teams either get byes or play a 50 point blowout.

It Ain't Bragging If You Can Do It (Dizzy Dean) ...

As an "experienced" journeyman official, I don't get a lot of coach votes for the state high school tournament and I'm alright with that. I know my limitations and the guys that do make it are almost always much better officials than me.

However I got an email this morning. I was selected to work the Catholic middle school state tournament, the second year in a row that I've been selected. And to top it off, my partner is a friend, a top notch official, that I observed working a high school state tournament game last night.

Not a big deal for most of you but it's a big deal for me. It's Saturday afternoon. I can't wait. I'm now officially a part of March Madness. Do I get a secret decoder ring? How about a "Fashion Police" badge?

Well done, Billy. It's always nice this time of year when the caller ID shows it is the state tournament assignor -- no matter what level of state tournament.

Billy,

Where is that game being played? If it is close enough, I would like to see you work.
