Disqualified Player

Player fouls out with 1 second, 5 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute.....
Player is ready to sub for DQ'ed player. Do you always tell the coach and player about the disqualification?

Duffman Tue Feb 07, 2012 10:45am

Always and without exception.

Yes, otherwise you have no recourse if the coach puts the player back into the game. Also, telling the coach makes the player bench personnel. Some coaches may get snippy about it when they've already sent the sub in, but you still have to tell them.

I also ensure that the sub goes to the table so that the opposing coach sees who is coming into the game. Some refs let the sub come in from the bench.

I make sure I say it loud enough by the table where the coach can hear that it is his fifth, then tell the player, then the coach gets his direct conversation and the player becomes bench personnel. Tell the table to start the 20 second timer. Horn at 5 sec, need sub. Horn at 20. Play on.

Yes, I always inform the coach. I rarely tell the player.
If the team has a sub at the table, I'll ask the coach, "is this the sub for #(dq'd)?". The coach almost always says yes and I bring the sub in without even needing to do the 20-second procedure.

Would anyone consider a technical for not reporting to the scorer if the sub comes directly onto the court from the bench? I had this happen a couple of weeks ago. I could see where reporting the DQ to the coach could be interpreted as "beckoning" (cajoling, pleading, etc. :)) the player", but isn't the sub still required to report? I didn't asses the T but later the thought crossed my mind.

No. I would direct the player to the table to report properly.

Just like Nevada, if a sub is already there, I ask if the sub reporting is for the DQ'd player.

?????

I wonder why some of my fellow officials do not tell the coach when the player fouls out and the sub is already there?????? Their statement (excuse) is "the sub is in the game, let's go."
Oh well.....

I'm not sure, but better safe than sorry on this
I can only think they're trying to speed things up, but that is when we make mistakes.

Apparently many players think it makes a difference when a player fouls out or is injured. I find it happens a lot that they will try to enter without reporting in these circumstances when they would not do so otherwise.

That doesn't mean the officials should let them do it, as juggalo indicated.

Agreed. I'm just saying that this wrong notion is a big enough deal, around here at least, to warrant some attention in advance. I have mentioned it in pregame. "Nobody enters without being beckoned. Even when somebody fouls out."
