Player in book not at game at beginning

Newbie question. If a player shows up late to a game but is in the scorebook is he eligible to play in the game?

Bad Zebra Fri Jan 27, 2012 12:03pm

Absolutely. No penalty...and welcome to the board.

grunewar Fri Jan 27, 2012 12:04pm

Yep, it's when he shows up late and is NOT in the book that there is a problem.

Where in the Federation rule book is this enumerated in case this is an issue?

The only requirement in the rule book is the player must be in the scorebook 10 minutes prior to the scheduled start time. There is no requirement that a player be present at the start of the game, so you won't find a reference to it in the rule or case book.

I've often said that if I were a coach, I'd take the school enrollment list and staple it to the scorebook as my "roster" -- just in case I needed someone to play in the game. ;)

Whoa - you might have an NBA player who's still in high school! ;)

As long as your enrollment doesn't exceed 36 students, since there are only 36 possible legal numbers in FED.

More Is Better ...

IAABO, not the NFHS, came out with a Refresher Test question a few years ago that basically said that a player who was not at the game site could not have his, or her, name written in the book. Our local interpreter told us to ignore the IAABO interpretation, and to keep on allowing more names in the book than may actually be in the layup lines.

If a team has identical numbers on team members, and/or players, after the ten minute time limit, then a team technical foul is charged. This infraction is charged and penalized upon discovery of identical numbers. Only one team member may wear a given number; the other must change to a number not already in use before participating.
