I won the bet

A1 gets fouled in the process of throwing the ball towards the wrong basket. The ball goes in the basket. Partner says to count the basket. I say NO basket. He says "I think you are wrong".. I tell him "The difference between you and I is that, you think I am wrong and I know I am correct!" He won't let it go, so he bets me dinner and shakes hands. Then tells me he likes steak!
After the game I get out the case book and read him case 4.41.2. He is still in denial. The other partner laughs and tells him he owes me dinner.

You're in for a treat! I understand that Missouri has some great steakhouses!

Did the ball go in the basket before or after(most likely) the foul?

Adam Sun Jan 15, 2012 12:16pm

Did you grant free throws?

BillyMac Sun Jan 15, 2012 12:19pm

"A1 gets fouled in the process of throwing the ball towards the wrong basket."

That means the foul occurred while he was throwing the ball, not after it went in the basket.

You don't know that. He could have been an airborne (non) shooter returning to the floor after a layup or finger roll.

In that case, the ball would become dead as soon as the ball passed through the basket. So the contact would be ignored unless intentional or flagrant.

Right. My point was that it was uncertain from the OP exactly when/where the contact took place.

I guess my only point is that it doesn't matter when foul occurred, because it can't be a shooting foul. And it can't even be a personal foul if the ball has already gone through the basket.

BillyMac Sun Jan 15, 2012 06:23pm

It Can't ???

And my only point was, though unlikely, the goal could count.

I don't think that's a shooting foul, by most people's vocab. A shooting foul is best understood as a foul committed while the opponent is in the act of shooting.

Here's something to think about. You see your teammate throw toward the other team's basket, if the ball is about to go in, foul the nearest opponent. No basket and no free throws.

Yes, I know, unless it is intentional or flagrant.
