Remember when a captain could request a defensive match-up if three or more substitutes enter the game?

Guess what? It's back for next season, as 3-3-1e.

I can remember being asked this maybe twice since I started working basketball, back in 1987. Anybody else remember this happening more frequently? Was this a regional thing, perhaps?

This will take time.

I thought the NF wanted to keep things moving? This seems like it will only delay the game further. Now coaches will be doing this on a regular basis.

Peace

I liked it better when it was in the book, but nobody knew it.

Now it will be mentioned at all the state meetings and we will see more of this.

Guys - all the rule says is that the captain may "request" a matchup. It doesn't say you have to grant one.

NYORK, NYORK, NYORK!

Don't grant it and you'll probably be making one of those "T" thingies with your hands. :)

Serious question

What does "request a defensive matchup" mean? The captain can ask to have everyone line up to assign matchups? Ii have a bad feeling that this is what it means, but I'm looking for confirmation. Thank you!

Don't put the ball in play until the defense is clear who is guarding whom.

Good advice even without the rule "change."

Thanks, Bob, and you're right -- one can avoid a lot of headaches if you just give the D a moment longer to match up. There's no reason to be in that big of a hurry.

I don't know if I totally agree with that, Bob. I don't consider it my job to ensure that the kids know who they're defending. That's the coach's job. I'm not even sure I would consider it to be game management. If the offense is ready to put the ball in play and you withhold it to let the defense get itself together, haven't you disadvantaged the offense unfairly? I'm just throwing it out there. I don't really have a strong feeling one way or the other. I just never heard anybody explicitly say that before.

I agree with Bob on this Chuck. If I hear a team discussing who's got who then I'll just wait to put the ball in play, either FT or OOB. Only takes a few seconds.

I'm just waiting for a captain to request the matchup, then come out and play zone.
