A1 receives pass at elbow, then dribbles just short of block where she ends her dribble. While ending her dribble A1 fumbles the ball in the air. A1 takes several steps to retrieve the fumble which never touches the ground. Travel or not?

No travel. Fumbler is allowed to go and retrieve without restriction.

How can one travel without possession of the ball?

Need possession to travel.

I had this in our game tonight, I no called it, partners had different take.

Basketball fundamentals at the back of the book. To travel, you must have possession via holding the ball. Can't travel during a dribble or a fumble, or what football calls a "muff".

No call, but you can expect some howling from the monkeys.

Ask your partner what rule requires a player to let a fumble hit the floor before he can recover it.

Please don't tell us that it was 3 feet in front of you and your partner made the call across the court. It has happened to me.

just another ref: I would hope that you would refrain from making long distance calls like this. Haven't you ever heard about primary coverage areas? Well, at least you owned up to it. That's the first step to becoming a better official.

During a fumble the player is not in control of the ball, and therefore, cannot be called for a traveling violation. A fumble is the accidental loss of player control when the ball is unintentionally dropped or slips from a player’s grasp. After a player has ended a dribble and fumbled the ball, that player may recover the ball without violating. Any steps taken during the recovery of a fumble are not traveling, regardless of how far the ball goes and the amount of advantage that is gained. It is always legal to recover a fumble, even at the end of a dribble, however that player cannot begin a new dribble, which would be an illegal dribble violation. A player who fumbles the ball when receiving a pass may legally start a dribble.

Second of all, I've done it. I've also called over the back and reaching in; and once, when I was doing my first year of middle school ball in college, I convinced a partner that any player on the court could shoot free throws for an injured player. We all call stupid stuff when we're just starting out.

I once used "over the back" in a game, only to describe the body movement that caused the foul. It felt weird to say it.

I worked with a guy last year who called that a few times in a game. He gave a signal that looked liked he was diving into a swimming pool. :o
