Actually, refs DO get unsolicited advice before and after games, in the stands, and the occasional late night phone call. Although you're right about not during practice -- unless you count camp.

But I just thought that coaches might have more clout in influencing the kinds of idiocy Packer commits on the air. Perhaps I'm wrong about that.

Also, I see that coaches are in some ways in a tougher spot from refs. We do have some camaraderie and support for each other, where coaches really are somewhat more isolated socially from each other. And I suppose you are more exposed to the carping of the parents than we are. Good heavens, am I gonna end up feeling SORRY for a coach? MAJOR PARADIGM SHIFT!!!

I agree. It puzzles me how anybody could coach at the college level and seem to have so little clue about rules, and also seem to say the most ridiculous things about game strategy. It seems to me tha the is so separated from his former role that he thrives on criticizing, without engaging his brain (assuming there is something there to engage).

You left out the part about missing wide open 12 foot jump shots.

We, refs and coaches at all levels, are not the audience Packer is speaking too. It is the great unwashed horde that has no more knowledge of the game than what they get from driveway ball that is his target. They all know that that reach was a foul, that they over-the-back was missed, and that why in the heck is 3 seconds not being call. Packer just feeds them what they want to hear.

Of course, you are exactly right. It's the same network structure that runs such inane garbage as "Survivor" and "The Millioniare". Gag!

Near the 16:00 mark of the 1st half in KU/Marquette Wade grabs the rim as a teammate taps the ball towards the basket. Wade releases the rim and then the ball goes in. Packer says the officials could have called that. Could he please read the BI rule? Oh, maybe he wanted them to call a T!
May I also add Jim Nance for his constant call of over-the-back.

Not to mention this one:
KU player shooting free throw... Marq. player appears to enter lane too soon.. ball goes in..
Nance says, calling attention to the violation " I can't believe that the refs didn't say something about that".

i liked this one best: Aaron Miles all alone with the first possession of the game, shoots the three, Packer says, "He really shouldn't try that.." SWISH!! I laughed out loud, Miles being a personal fave of mine.
