Top three?
Since we have a long thread going about the physical abilities of officials, I thought maybe we could discuss the top three attributes we like to see in a partner overall. Mine would be (in this order):
1) positive attitude with an open mind and no preconceived notions 2) rules knowledge including proper use of advantage/disadvantage 3) reasonable ability to get up and down the court into proper position Yours? |

1) Someone who enjoys being there. My least favorite partners are the ones who gripe about everything. 2) Good communication. When he blows his whistle, I know what's been called and what will happen next. Good communication skills also help as we work with players, coaches and table crews. 3) Hustle. Maybe this is a leftover from my coaching days, but when I see someone who moves quickly and purposefully into position, I am reasonably sure of a good game. |
Mark,
Why the open mind, no preconceived notions? |
1. Good playcaller
2. Team officiating mindset 3. Great communicator |

1) Good communicator. Pre-game, during, post game. We know where each other is at, we are working on being consistent, we can be honest and direct in our interactions.
2) Positioning confidence. They know where they are supposed to be, they know what we're each responsible for looking at. Calls are made or trusted to be made by the person who is responsible. They can get to and be responsible for the calls in their areas. 3) Calls a game within their limits. Show the rules knowledge you have and confidence you have in the way you officiate. If there is an area of weakness or you are in an overwhelming situation do not try to do to much or officiate with something to prove. Much like the players let the game come to you and focus on your strengths in the big moments. |

b) I don't want to work with a guy who comes into the game assuming it will be a blowout so he favors one of the teams to "make the game even" |
