I don't have the link, but I read an Associated Press story out of Grand Rapids, MI today about a high school player dropping a bag of marijuana out of his shorts during play in a playoff game. If anyone has the link to this story, I'm sure all the readers would appreciate it.

There was Gatorade on the sidelines, but no twinkies.

Seriously, that's a sad story. The kid's going to be expelled and maybe charged with possession. Just dumb. Hopefully, it's a wake up call for him, and not the first step down a slippery slope.

Different strokes (or is that "tokes") for different folks.

Some kids idolize Shaq and Kobe.

Some kids idolize Cheech and Chong.

And some kids combine the issues and idolize Shawn Kemp.

Good one Snaqwells! I laughed out loud. My question on the matter deals with going to the tape. The article reads as if the game officials looked a the tape during the game. I understand that drugs are a serious issue, but to my knowledge it is outside our jurisdiction to go to a tape. Am I not right about this?

canuckrefguy Wed Mar 12, 2003 12:01pm

Unwritten commandmant of officiating:

"Thou shalt cooperate fully with people who can lead you away in handcuffs."

Or, you can always invoke NCAA 2-3-1 for this one (I think that's the right numbers, anyway).

The article says "school officials" viewed the tape from one of the "several camcorders" present. My guess is that the game officials stepped back and let the school officials (AD, Principal, Super, Guidance Counselor, Senior Class Sponsor, math teacher, janitor) deal with the drugs. I would have done that.
Just as long as the coach didn't get to view the tape. (^:

Thanks. I guess I missed that it said "school officials". I thought it only read "officials". I think in that situation I would turn it over to site management also.

I happen to know the game officials that did this game.
What a goofy thing.
School officials believe that he dropped it from his sock during a scrum.
Too bad for everyone involved.

Hmmm, I\'m left wondering why he would bring it out onto the court in the first place. It\'s not like he was going to get a chance to light up during a time out.
