I've bragged about this website and all of you. I tell all my fellow Refs about this thread and how helpful it is.
Okay here it is (NC2A rules): A1 drives to the basket and is fouled intentionally by B1 and the ball goes in. Intentional foul is called. What is the penalty? I say clear the lane, shoot one for the and one, 2 FTs for the intentional and the ball at a designated spot. A friend said I was assessing two fouls. Makes sense! Your thoughts????

The penalty for an intentional foul is two shots (unless it's on an unsuccessful 3 point attempt). Therefore the basket counts, clear the lane for two free throws by the person that was fouled and the ball out of bounds spot closest to the foul.

According to the NCAA book, penalty for intentional is 2 FT's and possesion at "designated spot", which I believe means at the halfcourt line.

Intentional foul while shooting = two FT's + possession at halfcourt.
Intentional foul while shooting + ball goes in = count the hoop + 2 FT's + possession at half.

Throw-in at the spot nearest the foul, not at half-court!
All personal fouls that lead to a throw-in are done at the designated spot nearest to where the foul occurred. Most technical fouls are handled by resuming at POI. There are some exceptions, which I won't go into unless someone asks. Here's the rule reference:
Rule 10, Section 21. Personal-Foul Penalties Art. 2. The offended player shall be awarded free throw(s) as follows: b. Two free throws for: 2. An intentional personal or flagrant personal foul (women: flagrant foul) and the ball awarded at the designated spot nearest to where the foul occurred. c. Three free throws for: A personal foul against a player who attempts a three-point field goal and whose try is unsuccessful. When the personal foul is intentional or flagrant, the ball also shall be awarded to the offended team at the designated spot nearest to where the foul occurred. |

The foul/penalty chart in the NCAA rulebook has "point of interruption" for some fouls (indirect/direct technicals, for example)...and "designated spot" for flagrant and intentional fouls.
easy to get confused...

(Actually, POI IS used in one instance in Fed. Shall we make it a quiz?) |
