A co-worker of mine just returned from a vacation in the Amazon. They were fishing for dinner one night (catfish and pirhana) using pieces of chicken as bait, when two howler monkeys jumped on the boat to get at the chicken. For future reference, a few sharp whacks with wooden canoe paddles works well in getting howler monkeys off your boat. :-)

Love it, but did they try seat belting them first? Seems pretty harsh to go right to the paddles.

No, they tried prodding them off the boat w/ the fishing rods first, but that didn't work. Then they just pushed them with the paddles, but that just ticked the monkeys off and they started howling. Finally, after a couple of whacks with the paddles, the howler monkeys jumped into the water and swam off. I guess pirhanas don't like the taste of howler monkeys.
