Hey...anybody see the Daytona 500?
I guess racing announcers like to "rip" racing officials, just like basketball announcers like to "rip" basketball officials! BTW, what did you think about the Coors Light car getting a one lap penalty for going below the "yellow" line? Hmmmmm, it is easier officiating from the "cheap" seats. ;) Dude |
NASCAR has left themselves open for criticism for some of the things they've done in the past. I would compare it moreso to announcers criticizing the league, as opposed to the officals.
As far as Sterling's penalty, I think it's kind of a silly rule to begin with. But drivers were told in the drivers meeting if they went below the yellow line and passed, they get a stop and go. For once, they stuck to their guns. BTW, what a sucky way to start the season. :( http://www.nascar.com/drivers/dps/jg...rdon00_car.jpg |

...sorta like the all-star game ending in a tie

The rules don't make a distinction between the Daytona 500 and the New England 300. All races are the same. If the race goes past the half-way point, it can't be carried over to the next day. It's an official race, just like a baseball game that goes 6 innings.
|
As stated below,
All other races (world wide) have just about this exact same rule.
The same rule has been in effect at Indy since 1919. The rule maybe "sucky" but it is fair to not only all the drivers, owners, officials and fans it is also fair to the "next" race where cars (a different set of cars than those used at Daytona) are due in Thursday. I do not remember this big a stink when the INDY 500 has been rained out short of completion. Since I am affiliated with one of the teams I will now step down from my soap box. |

And while it's true that baseball allows for weather shortened games, how many World Series have been decided by a 6-inning game? Chuck |

You are almost correct:
IRL, CART and F1 all race in the rain. All three have the exact same rule: If for "any reason" a race cannot be completed after 50% of the advertised distance the race is deemed complete. No race can be suspended after the 1/2 way mark and be started on the next available date. |
Correction IRL DOES NOT race in the rain.
Cart will race rain at all courses EXCEPT oval tracks or tracks deemed unsafe to run with the rain tires. F1 races until the rain is hard enough to signifigantly reduce visibility. |
Thank you John,
It is difficult to cover ALL choices in a post . . .
What I meant was: Like NASCAR all car races sometimes have rain. When it rains some circuits have a lower tolerance for that rain. Nascar and IRL (and CART when racing on ovals) are the first to suspend races. F1 races go much farther into rain situations (in fact they change to "rain" tires). However, ALL car racing circuits have a ruling that if a race passes the 50% mark of the advertised distance the and the race cannot be completed for WHATEVER reason the race will be deemed complete. DAYTONA and NASCAR was no different then ANY of the racing groups as to ending the race. Thanks to all who tried to give Chuck the correct rulings based on all types of auto races. Now Chuck, there is a difference between the SuperBowl/World Series analogy and Daytona. 1) 43 race teams must move their cars (over ground) to the next weeks race. Haulers carry two cars and take time to travel. 2) 250,000 fans have to be told to come back on Monday (a work day for most, no matter how many teeth they have) to see the end of a race. Shoot Chuck, the USGA gets HUGE backlash when the U S Open Golf Tourney is tied and goes to an 18 hole playoff the NEXT DAY. That is only 30,000 on course fans and TV. 3) Finally, cars change when they sit (see Dale Jr.) and race would not be the same race the "next racing day." Hey I was a dissapointed as all others but I understand it is the system. End of NASCAR issues, honest. Tee |
