Did anyone see that game last night? I have a couple of NBA rules questions:

When does a player have to sit on the bench? Two Techs plus a flagrant and he is still playing. Does anyone know the rule?

On a side note, good job of the officials for keeping this tough game under control.

Quote:
Peace prevailed until the fourth quarter. With 8:13 left, Artest was called for a flagrant foul when he ran over Butler as they chased a loose ball out of bounds. Butler sank both free throws to put Miami ahead 81-76.

Then, two minutes later, Artest hit a driving scoop shot, was fouled and walked toward the Miami bench with his right arm flexed. As he exchanged words with assistant coach Keith Askins, Artest brushed against Riley. They began shouting at each other, and Riley shoved Artest away.

Artest was called for a technical. After Miami's Eddie Jones missed that free throw, Artest sank his free throw to cut Miami's lead to 83-82. He then backpedaled up the court with both middle fingers aloft.

Just read the box score. Artest did NOT have two technical fouls.
But just for info.
Two unsportsmanlike technical fouls and a player is ejected.
Two flagrant fouls, (penalty 1) and a player is ejected.
One flagrant foul, (penalty 2) and a player is ejected.
One unsportsmanlike T, and one flagrant foul (penalty 1) is not cause for ejection.
Flagrant foul (penalty 1) is not considered unsportsmanlike.
Flagrant foul (penalty 2) is.
Hope this helps.

p.s. And if a player gets two T's, he doesn't go to the bench, he leaves the building.

Great summary, Drake. But how could Artest give both fingers to the crowd and not get his second technical? I didn't see it, but I'd have to think that the NBA brass would want that called, wouldn't you?

Chuck

Usually players actions towards the fans don't get penalized by the officials unless they go into the stands.
(which by the way is an ejection WITHOUT a T being assesed.)
So not really surprising. You can bet that it was included in the game report however.

As to the early hour, you work when you can get it!

Thanks for the summary. Didn't Artest have a flagrant foul at 8:13 left? I'm confused.

Maybe he did, Denny. But look at Drake's summary again. It takes two Flagrant (type 1) fouls to be disqualified. Flagrant in NBA is not the same as Flagrant in HS/NCAA. In NBA, "flagrant" basically means "excessive". It's more like what we would call intentional. But if you get two of them in the NBA, you're tossed. Also, they're not unsportsmanlike, so if you have a T and a flagrant (type 1), you're not ejected.

Hope that helps a little.

Chuck
