Number of officials

Hello everybody,
I'm wondering something :
Which season the NBA did it decide to pass from two to three referees?

If nobody gets the answer onto this board, you could look it up in Earl Strom's book "Calling the Shots." I know it's in there, but I sure don't remember!

The NBA went to 3 officials for the 1989-1990 season, which just happened to be my late father Earl Strom's final season. They also experimented with 3 officials during the 1977-1978 regular season, but scrapped it for the playoffs.
