FWIW: In our area, it is not uncommon to see (call) a handcheck on a "non-ballhandler". I agree with RecRef... A push is easier to sell but I call handchecks frequently and with little disagreement from the coaches. Perhaps they are not concerned with (or pay attention to) the specific mechanic used to signal which foul was called.
