I was expecting a slightly different question based upon the title....

I have wondered myself about throw-in in the backcourt. Looking at the Mechanics Manual, I find there is no differentiation between a frontcourt and a backcourt throw-in location. Follow the same diagram (#3 page 21 in last year's manual) for FC and BC throw-ins. If the foul, violation, ball location for a time out is within the hatched area (key, inlcuding the free-throw semi-circle; or in the "wings" - triangular area formed with the key by drawing a line from the free-throw line to the corners of the court) the throw-in should be from the baseline. Otherwise it is the closest position on the sideline.

Call timeout from the BC with the ball in the free-throw semi-circle? You get no credit for advancing the ball 18 feet down the court - your throw-in spot will be from the baseline.

And yes, a BC violation throw-in spot follows the above directions - nearest OOB spot. It is NOT thrown in at half court unless that is where the violation occurs (ball is touched in BC at the division line).
