What is the proper signal for a free throw that does not hit the rim ?

That's what we compare swirling to. I blow the whislte, verbalize the violation, point the other way and give the spot.

Never thought of it as "swirl the toilet bowl", but it is the signal I've always used and everyone understands what it is. Good communication IMO.
