This sounds like an unbelievable cluster. You have to be in the running for the worst game of the year.

This truly sounds like Rec league hell. Here is something I have used in the past when it looks like things are going to be like this the whole game. I will get the coaches together and let them know that we have heard enough complaining and we are not going to tolerate anymore from the coaches or players. I then let the coaches know that I am going over to the table to check some things out for the next 10-15 seconds and that I expect them to use this time to relay what I have said to their players. I then step away
blow my whistle and instruct the players go to their benches
and call my partner to the table and go over what was said.
It has worked more often than not to get everyones mind back on playing ball and off the complaining.

MD,

Does your intermural league use NF or NCAA rules?

Mark, why were there players in the blocks? Wouldn't all five shots have been with only a shooter on the line or did I miss something here???

By the way - tough luck, tough game. Men's rec league will certainly stress and bend every rule in the book!

Obviously, G95 stepped below the FT extended, or he disconcerted.

Mark,
At this point could you have disarmed the players with a "Relax, fellas", or a "Take it easy", or a stop sign?
mick
I wish.

We had been trying to get them to calm down all game long (we were in the second half by this point), and even here I believe I said something to this effect or a "that's enough, let's just play," etc.

Mark,

Still sounds like your partners should have been more involved here....no way one guy out of three should be (or should be forced into) calling all these T's.

As for yourself, relax. Every official has something every year they remember for the wrong reason.

Just take pride in the fact you're doing something only one out of every 1000 people could do...and stick with.

I just don't get upset....

over rec ball anymore.

I started working the local league in January. Something to do on Wednesday nights (I will only do one night a week during the season).

Last night I heard more whining than I'd hear in 10 seasons of HS ball. I ignore all of it. It's rec ball. It makes me thankful for the prep howler monkeys

Rich

Not quite, mick - he stepped over the 3 PT line outside of the FT line extended.

Now for some of the other questions:

Yes, it is an intramural league - slightly modified NF rules with (generally) no coaches. (Just captains - can be tough when you T up the captain.)

Yes, we use 3-person mechanics (don't know why at times). Yes, we do 3 games per night (running clock).

As to the ref/umpire situation: the R was the R for the sole reason that he conducted the jump ball. I've been told by this year's boss that we're *all* referees on the court (should be fun if we ever have a dispute on a last second shot) and told by the boss last year that any official has the authority to forfeit the game if circumstances warrant.

Senior members - no disrespect taken, Stripes.

Hear, hear!

It's probably better training than Padgett's suggestion of a treadmill in a dark closet.

Then that works.

But honestly Mark, you have an opportunity to grow as an official if you can walk away from some of these types of situations. If it has to happen, fine. But it would be better if your partners would step in and shoulder some of the burden.
