Pregame questions-calling rec ball under Natl. Fed rules.
A)What topics do you focus on in your pregame with your partner? B)What do you cover with coaches in pregame? C) What do you cover with captains? Thanks, C |
good luck, i never got much response from partners when i did rec ball.
|
Thanks, Bart.
Gotta start somewhere! C |
I never did any thing with coaches. That would be a waste of time. If you are going to do a pregame with your partner then cover the coverage area and help with shooters. Go over the procedures when we call a "T".
|
Thanks again. Will do tomorrow.

Let us know how your games go...

Good thing I thought of this-had 1st timer with me working 4 game set of girls 11-12 rec league ball.
Covered-switching, primary coverage areas, special situations (blood/injury, 30 sec left on clock signals to each other, what to do if T) After each game, went back in room and reviewed what went well and what to focus on next game. By end of 4 th game, he was more comfortable. Think that model worked, especially since I went first and talked about what I missed and what I needed to do next time. Issues: Kept getting amoeba-ball under basket for rebounds-felt I was missing stuff and kept inching in closer and closer. Tried to move farther away (was back to wall on end line- 8 ft clearance) but still couldn't see thru the scrum-Suggestions? 2- what do other associations do in terms of training rookies? Will volunteer my services (see a problem, solve the problem...) to help work/design program for first timers and would welcome any/all wisdom from other association members on what they do different/special for first timers. Thanks, CH |

Thanks.
BTW, Stan. Amoeba-ball is local term for situation when 8 of the 10 players are all underneath the basket trying to get the ball. AKA rugby scrum. C |

As to covering it - you're definately going to miss stuff, so call what you can/do see and don't worry about the rest. I definately agree that you should stay put - if you're moving, everything will just blur together (or maybe that's just my poor eyesight :p) and it will be harder to tell who hit whom. Also, this can be a situation where having another official watching the rebounding (especially weak side and players blocked from your view) can help - even if in a 2 man crew. |
NC_rec_ref, where do you live in NC?

And you? Thanks to all who posted. Good advice on amoeba-ball. Any wisdom on what you cover in pregame conference with other official and with coaches? C |
I live just outside Fayetteville and officiate in the Southeastern association.
Have you spoken with anyone in the Triangle association about officiating school games? As far as our pre-game goes, I've worked with the same two partners for the past 5 years. After 5 years of working as a crew, you know each other like the back of you hand, so our pregame is not typical. We discuss specific team issues, previous game experiences with the teams, coaches, and players. Rarely do we ever go down a "list " of things. Of course, early in the season, we discuss rule changes. Pregames with coaches are just the required info. The NCHSAA requires us to ask: "Coach, are all your players properly equipped?" "Are you going to help us promote good sportsmanship?" Pregame with coaches in rec league can be a little different. I usually bring both coaches to the center circle with the captains, speak with and then excuse the captains, then speak directly with the coaches about what we will be doing and what we expect of them. Go to my profile and drop me an email, when you get a chance. |

There are some obvious advantages to working with the same guys all the time...but don't you miss out on working with different people that come into your association? 5 years...hmmmmm, there are alot of MARRIAGES that don't last that long. :D Dude |

"Captains Shake hands and introduce yourself" I intro myself and my P. I determine who the "speaking captains" are and let them know they can come to us during the game with any questions. I ask the Captains: "Any questions?" I ask my partner: "P you got anything?" "Shake hands and have a great ball game" Thats it. They arent listening anyway. I've worked as the U with guys who go into this long speech about the black line all the way around is out of bounds, if we blow the whistle, stop play, if the ball hits anything hanging from the ceiling its OOB, we're going to enforce this or that etc etc etc. On a good day you'll even hear "You're here to learn and this is an extension of your learning experience....Blah Blah Blah. Yadda Yadda Yadda. Hello!!!....no one is listening except your partner. I've been told by more than one OLD DAWG that its ceremonial. Get in, shake hands, get out. So thats what I do. Larks |
I agree...no long drawn out Captain's Meeting.
But it is a time you can show the player's a little of your personality...friendly but firm. I don't go over rules, etc. but I do add... "See all these people here (pointing to the stands)... none of them came to watch us officials...they paid to see you guys play and your coaches coach...so let's have a good game where we don't have to get all "funky"!" (Something like that) Short and sweet. Dude |
Here is one I use in upper level games where the level of play is high and we have many skilled players on the floor (upper div HS and JuCO)
"guys/Ladies, no one in the stands including yourselves came here to watch us blow our whistles. Remember that while we are playing and we will be fine.. Any questions??? Good luck and Have Fun!!" I totally agree w/ the short pre-game at the upper levels no one is paying attention anyways. Get in and get out. In MN we are also required to get a speaking captain as well as to ask the coaches about legally equipped players (even though they usually have no clue whether they are anyways. They also ask us to mention to both about promoting good sportsmanship. |

Why is it I can get a long speech out of a partner during the captains meeting but don't get a good pregame in the locker room??????

I get an occassional opportunity to work with different official. I'm filling in on a varsity doubleheader on tomorrow night and filling in on a JV doubleheader on Thursday. I am looking forward to the Thursday assignment because one of the officials is a rookie and the other is a 3rd year who isn't progressing very well. If I survive it, it should provide a few teachable moments. ;) I really enjoy working within the crew concept. The three of us get along very well and work well together. I normally work with a different crew 2-4 times a season. But I'm certainly more comfortable working with my crew. I know what to expect in any situation, know how they will react, and know what they're going to call. As I said, it's comfortable. |
