Throwing ball off of backboard and catching

Player A dribbles into his front court and stops at the free throw line and ends his dribble. A second or two later, he throws the ball against his backboard, runs in to catch it and scores. Legal play?

If this is not considered a try for goal then essentially it is a pass to him(her)self. Is this legal?
