I've seen people counting with their fingers as they swing their arms, but I quickly cure them of that.

OK, I'll ask. How?

I'm the chairman of the Observation Committee of my local board. It's part of my job to observe and critique newer officials. Sometimes they get a verbal evaluation, sometimes it's written. But in either case, if I see fingers marking the count, the official gets a proverbial butt-kicking.

verbal count

I do use a verbal count for 6th 7th and 8th grade games. However I don't use them for 9th - 12th. If they aren't smart enough to count my arm swings then rain on them!!!!

No, but if the coach and/or teammate can't count maybe they need to go back to the 6th grad !!!

Counting out loud gives an advantage to the offense and to the defense.

Huh. To give an advantage, one or the other have to "get it". How can both get an advantage by the same thing.

Just pullin your chain
